Welcome to the Eastern Art Blog!

The Ashmolean Museum’s Department of Eastern Art first opened its galleries in 1963, following an earlier incarnation in the University of Oxford’s former Indian Institute (1897-1962).

Our wide-ranging collections of Asian art are the most representative in Britain outside London. They range in date from early antiquity to the present day and cover the Islamic world, Indian subcontinent, Himalayan region and Southeast Asia, as well as China and Japan. The collections include paintings, prints, sculpture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles and other decorative arts. There is also an archive of historic photographic material and other documentation.

  1. Just discovered this “”Eastern Art” website as an incidental result of attending part of
th recent conference on “Painting in China sice 1900” at the China Centre.
The quality, range and liveliness of the entries are excellent. I particularly enjoyed
Yan Liu’s celebration of the Monkey – and am sorry to have just missed the actual
    exhibition.
Please keep me informed of future events arranged by the Eastern Art Department
